The Place of Memory and Specificity of Site : In Conversation with Vivan Sundaram and Homi Bhabha
30 January 2014
Speakers: Homi Bhabha, Vivan Sundaram
This discussion focused on Vivan’s two installation works, Structures of Memory and Memorial, and the speakers deliberated upon the significance of the architecture of the site and how it affected the work by adding meaning to it. The talk explored the idea of how every work has an afterlife which aims at the survival of that work. Memory and pretext always come before the historical event, and the afterlife is not just a reconstruction of history and trauma. Homi explored the temporality of the works and contemplated on the way in which the site specific installation gave both motility in meaning and mobility in form to both figures. This element of temporality disrupts the continuity of the historicized narrative. Subsequently, these interpolations further distance the site from which the original propositions began.
