Discussion in this panel was centered on the project titled ‘Bhopal: Memory, Movement and Museum’, which was part of the exhibition 'Zones of Contact: Propositions on the Museum'. The project deals with the aftermath of the 1984 Bhopal Gas Tragedy, the largest industrial disaster and the rights of the affected community to memorialize it in their own morally befitting way, sans any governmental intrusion, which was considered the chief perpetrator of the disaster by the survivors. This project foregrounded the imperative need to reshape the contours of the contemporary art museum in India and the subcontinent by overhauling the dominant national and museum narrative and ushering in contemporary social movements as museum worthy stories.
