Born in 1887 in Beliatore village, Bankura , West Bengal, Jamini Roy enrolled at the Government School of Art (presently known as Government College of Art & Craft), Kolkata under the tutelage of Abanindranath Tagore in 1903. Roy began his career as a commissioned portrait painter. However, drawing from indigenous sources he formed his unique style by the 1920s.

His paintings were exhibited for the first time in Calcutta in 1938, and touched new heights of popularity by 1940s with the Bengali middle class and European clientele. In 1953 his works were exhibited in New York, and in 1946, they were exhibited in London. They were included among the ‘Nine Masters’ by the Archaeological Survey of India in 1976. Roy became the first Indian painter to be honoured with Fellow of the Lalit Kala Akademi, in 1955 and was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1954.

His works have been exhibited extensively within the country and outside, and are part of eminent collections such as the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Jamini Roy had spent most of his life living and working in Calcutta. He passed away in 1972.
