Amruta Kalasha: Thanjavur and Other South Indian Paintings

Kiran Nadar Museum of Art was host to a memorable symposium on Thanjavur and Other South Indian Paintings, organized as a collateral event of the special exhibition ‘Amruta Kalasha’ from the private collection of renowned architect Kuldip Singh. With elaborate paper presentations by art historian Dr. Anna Dallapiccola (read on her behalf by Dr. Nayanjot Lahiri) who has authored a book on this particular collection, Pradeep Chakravarthy, G R Singh and Ar. Kuldip Singh himself, the panel was chaired by art historian Dr. Madhu Khanna. The session provided rich insights into the traditions of Thanjavur and Mysore painting styles, its development and histories, range of materials used and techniques of execution. These paintings in larger sacred, public and domestic worlds are marked by a changing history of patronage. Kuldip Singh shared his journey of building this rare collection and his engagement with the South Indian paintings which he sees within the larger history of icons and devotional practices in South India.
