Architecture Adda # 1: So, What About Modernism?
3 June 2017
Speakers: Amardeep Labana, Parul Kiri Roy and Uttiya Bhattacharya. Moderated by Sarover Zaidi and Neha Tickoo
KNMA inaugurated first of it's Architecture Adda series which aims to be platform for talks and discussions for interdisciplinary exchange amongst artists, architects, designers, anthropologists and researchers to map the routes that architectural forms, cityscapes , urban facades and art practices adopt, revealing not just politics but also memories and anecdotes from pedagogy to practice. Given the title, "So, What About Modernism?", the discussion began with Mr Labana sharing prevalent pedagogical norms that have been defining as well as influencing Modernity in architecture. Parul Kiri Roy then spoke of inculcating Vernacular architecture and traditional knowledge systems into the modernist pedagogy at architecture schools and making training more "experiential". Finally Uttiya Bhattachrya essentially narrated tender and bureaucratic experience from his own practice, giving an account of issues plaguing the practice of architecture in current times.
