Invitation for a Coup with SRESHTA RIT PREMNATH
KNMA was host to an evening of contemplating the first coup with Sreshta Rit Premnath, the co-founder of Shifter Magazine, and Assistant Professor at Parsons, New York. In the light of his past works, he elaborated on the quintessential absences in the world around him and his art. Sreshtha Rit Premnath catapulted us into a chain of four keywords: Negation, Redaction, Erasure, and Possibility. Quoting and working with examples of disappearances, of cargo ships, public statues, exhibitions, among other things, he put forth unique but political positions of temporary occupation of land through repose and rest with the figure of a migrant labourer seen squatting, and dogs sleeping in public spaces. He spoke of his fancy for the emptiness of the bright green backgrounds used to digitally manipulate images. Ruminating poetically through his artworks from 2008, and especially with regards to his work ‘Zero Knot’ (2010) he ended the session with his poem ‘Withdrawn’.
