Drawing with Thread II" is an immersive four-module workshop series that invites you to explore the contemporary art of thread drawing, guided by renowned fibre artist Gopika Nath. Through the use of a minimalist black thread palette, you'll create a personal stitch journal that captures real-life elements and emotions in tactile, expressive artworks. Each module builds on the previous one, taking you on a journey to discover the beauty of thread artistry, fabric collage, and advanced stitching techniques, culminating in a finished artwork. This series is perfect for those seeking to slow down and find creative mindfulness through the medium of stitch.

Join this transformative experience to reconnect with your creativity and explore the intricate beauty of thread artistry! Book 1 or more modules!

Module 1: Creative Drawing (21 Sept, 2pm-6pm)

By-line: Learn with the Artist Gopika Nath to create expressive artworks with Thread and Stitches Inspired by Real-Life Elements.

The first session is dedicated to igniting your creativity through spontaneous drawing exercises using pen, charcoal, and graphite. These intuitive drawings will reflect your inner child and set the stage for the rest of the workshop. The drawings will be chosen carefully and then translated onto fabric using thread, serving as the foundation for more detailed work in the following modules.

Module 2: Colour & Texture (28 Sept, 2pm-6pm)

By-line: Learn to elevate your own unique thread Art with Paint, Collage, and Textiles with Artist Gopika Nath

In this module, you’ll elevate your thread art by introducing fabric collage, paint, and a variety of stitches. You will learn how to layer your stitched narratives using collected fabrics, such as fashion house scraps and katrans, while experimenting with different techniques to add depth and texture to your work. This session focuses on adding colour and texture to your stitched drawings to create dynamic and multidimensional artworks.

Modules 3 and 4: Creating Fibre Art (5-6 Oct, 2pm-6pm)

By-line: Learn the Art of Mastering Stitches: Explore Advanced Thread Techniques and Intricate Detailing with Artist Gopika Nath.

The final modules will guide you in mastering advanced thread techniques and detailing. Transitioning from initial sketches, you will draw directly onto fabric with thread, incorporating limited stitches and unconventional embroidery methods to further elevate your art. Using a combination of collage, paint, beads, and thread, you’ll create a completed fiber artwork that encapsulates your stitching journey. By the end of the workshop, you’ll assemble your thread sketches into a stitch journal, ready to continue exploring the vast possibilities of thread art.

Artist Bio:

Gopika Nath is a practising textile artist, writer and a teacher with over thirty years of experience of teaching at various art and design institutes. For the last decade she has also been conducting on-line master classes. A Fulbright Scholar and alumnus of Central St. Martin’s School of Art and Design (CSM), U.K, she lives and works in Goa, India.

Gopika’s teaching methodology builds on psychological theories, such that Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi called an “optimal experience” – a satisfying involvement that generates a state of consciousness called ‘flow’ when people typically undergo deep enjoyment, profound creativity, and a total engagement with life. During her workshops, countless students have recounted tapping into that quiet reservoir of inner calm and inspiration.
