In Memory of Madan Mahatta

Speakers:    Ram Rehman, Devika Daulat-Singh
Discussant: Roobina Karode

This talk acted as an occasion to commemorate the life and work of an extraordinary man and photographer Madan Mahatta, whose works were exhibited in 'An Unfinished Portrait: Vignettes from the Collection'. The speakers contextualized Mahatta’s photography in the history of architectural photography of Delhi and shared the memories of their meetings with the artist, as well as divulged details of his artistic journey. When the air was instilled with a fresh wave of excitement and idealism for building a new India post-independence, Mahatta, a trained studio photographer unlike any other at the time, was one of the key figures in documenting the making of Delhi from 1950s to the 80s, the peak period of Nehruvian modernism, through his unique perspective and unwavering passion for capturing that great moment.
