The conversation ensued in the context of ‘The Lightening Testimonies’ by Amar Kanwar (an eight projection video installation that brings together the testimonies of sexual violence against women during times of conflict), a part of the exhibition 'Is it What You Think? (Ruminations on Time, Memory & Site)'. Ayesha Kidwai, through her talk titled 'A Critical Recovery of the Recovery Operation: Reviewing Partition and Reclaiming Lost Ground' turned the certainty of the feminist case to a very uncomfortable period in Indian history─ uncomfortable to its citizen, uncomfortable for a feminist─ the post partition recovery of abducted women. Interweaving the past with the present, she contended a reexamination of the by now standard conclusion that Mridula Sarabhai and her social workers’ efforts and intentions in the recovery of women abducted under the Abducted Persons (Recovery and Rehabilitation) Ordinances and Acts, in force till 1957, were in consonance with those of the patriarchal state.
