Distant Firelights - Film festival in collaboration with Light Cube Film Society

Film as a medium works towards documenting the journey at length, and in that context Arrival of the train at Ciotat is not only about the arrival of the train but the distance that it covered to reach its desired destination. Film as a medium has the capacity to enter the physical space around the globe as well as affect the human soul in an unparalleled way. Thus a film functions to bring the voices of the marginalized to the forefront as well as shed light upon the process of marginalization itself.

Distant Firelights was a collection of films that attempted to study, in varying measures, three fundamental qualities of the film medium: its interest in landscapes, time and the margins. The festival commenced with the screening of films like At Land by Maya Deren, Sita Sings the Blues by Nina Paley, Once Upon a Time in Beirut by Jocelyn Saab and Journey to Nagaland by Aditi Chitre. Other films that were screened were Matimaye by Chitra Palekar, The House in Black by Forugh Farrokhzad and Beau Travail by Claire Denis.
